Parent Mentor Program

Empowering Parents

Through a collaborative partnership with SWOP and Parent Engagement Institute, Indo-American Center (IAC) implements the Parent Mentor Program (PMP) in 4 Chicago public schools. IAC recruits parents to become parent mentors within their child’s school community. Utilizing the PMP guide, we train our parent mentors via individual support and weekly workshops. The weekly workshops are designed to develop leadership skills and build confidence. We also work with Principals and teachers to ensure parent mentors are providing the type of support the school needs. PMP is a structured program empowering parents to provide the needed support in their child’s school. The Parent Mentor Program helps strengthen a parent’s connection to their child?s educational journey. The program cultivates stronger relationships between families and schools creating a more welcoming and supportive environment.

Parent Mentors provide extra assistance in classrooms acting as an additional support for teachers and children. Parents have an assigned classroom and deliver support for students either 1:1 or through group work. They fulfill an 8 hour weekly commitment, Monday through Friday.

We are honored to partner with four local schools Dewitt Clinton Elementary School, Mosaic School Of Fine Arts, West Ridge Elementary School and Jamieson Elementary School. A number of our parents have achieved further professional certifications and secure employment through our program.
